Assignment 9 - Video/Visual Variety

Posted in Assignments on October 30th, 2007 by Jenn Ackerman

Due Tues. Nov. 6

For this assignment you will be shooting video. I am not so much concerned with your ability to make a full-length movie as I your ability to move throughout a scene, create visual variety and understand image sequencing. With that said, I am requiring wide, panoramic, medium, tight, detail, and portrait shots. I don’t want you to get bogged up in the format so use what you know about photography and use the same devices  and compositional techniques we have discussed throughout the quarter. Video is a great way to reveal your knowledge  and ability to produce visual variety.

Decide on a partner you can work with and divide the shooting in half. As a team you only need to 3-4 minutes of film varying images from loose to tight, splitting the time with your partner.

You need to buy one Mini DV tape which you can buy at Walmart or CVS. Please buy a name brand DV tape.

In order to show your video in class, please rewind the tape to a place where we can see visual variety for 30 seconds. During this 30 seconds I want to see that you can tell me something using different types of shots. Ultimately, I want to see the most interesting and most successful
segment.

Shoot in auto and concentrate on composition and visual sequencing.

Make sure you charge the batteries for the next team.

Assignment 10 - Portfolio & Evaluation

Posted in Assignments on October 29th, 2007 by Jenn Ackerman

ASSIGNMENT 10: VICO 221 PORTFOLIO
DUE NOV. 13

Editing your best images - 20 single images plus one of your stories.

1. For your final portfolio, place your favorite images into a folder you title “(LastName)_Portfolio_##”.

2. A one-page double-spaced evaluation is due with your portfolio. This is an evaluation of your growth as a photographer throughout the quarter. Please be specific with your growth and those things you still need to work on.

If your pictures were weak from any of the assignments, now is the chance to reshoot for your VICO 221 Portfolio. For example, if your Photojournalism or Shutter Speeds received a low grade, replace either or both by reshooting for your portfolio.

You do not need to reshoot a whole roll for each assignment. Just shoot enough to replace specific images. Your completed portfolio will receive a grade. This grade does not replace the grades you have already received but improves the portfolio grade. I do not want to see your outtakes.

If you would like to improve on any of your weak images, please do the following:

1. Gather your original portfolio as described in this assignment’s step Number 1.
2. Add your reshoot images to their appropriate assignment folder. Name them the same except that “_RS” (for ReShoot) should be added to the end of the name, just before the “.jpg”

We will be looking at your portfolio on the last day of class, Nov. 13. Bring a loose edit to class on Nov. 8 to get editing help.

MIDTERM

Posted in Announcements on October 17th, 2007 by Jenn Ackerman

MIDTERM:

The midterm will be a mix of short answer, multiple choice, T&F and equivalent exposure questions.

I made the review sheet from the exam so if you know that you will be fine.

As for what you need to know for the photographer presentations: As I told you in class, I dont want you to memorize dates, the purpose of these presentations is to become knowledgeable in the world of photography so I want you to have a conversational knowledge of all of these photographers. I will only test you on something specific if they have taken an iconic image. For example, I might ask what style xy is known for or tell me something about that struck you about xy’s work.

Just like the equivalent exposure questions used on the quizzes, you will need to know how to change the ISO, shutter speed and aperture.

I will not be testing you on color management and gamut. We will go over that a little after the midterm but it will be on your final. This also includes, RGB, CMYK, additive and subtractive processes.

Ch. 17 on the review, know the creative devices and visual elements. I will test you on the photographers presented in class rather than the ones on the book.

Midterm Review Sheet

I just sent you all an email with the review sheet. You can also download it here.

There will be no surprises. You will be tested on material from the lecture, critiques and readings from the book. I have put together this comprehensive review sheet. If you know this information, you will do fine.

Assignment 6 - Portrait

Posted in Assignments on October 14th, 2007 by Jenn Ackerman

ASSIGNMENT 6 - Portrait & Commercial
DUE OCT. 16

Be sure to shoot 40 images for this assignment. Research images in magazines or books. Analyze photographs of product advertising, food
displays, interior decorating and fashion for examples. Please be creative. For this assignment, you will be making two portraits, one self portrait and a commercial photo.

1. Create two portraits. They can be the same person. In one portrait, make the environment an important aspect of the photograph. Be sure
that the environment communicates something about the person in the photograph. Try different camera angles and compositions of the same scene.

2. In the other portrait, shoot a much tighter shot of the person using interesting light. Use your knowledge of direction, intensity and color of
light. Visual interest counts, so make sure the facial expressions are appropriate.

3. Self portrait. You come up with an idea for a good environmental portrait of yourself. A friend may be used to trip the shutter, but you need
to set everything up and are ultimately responsible for the image. Don’t hand the camera to a friend and say “Hey, just take some pictures of me.”

4. Commercial/Still life: This is your chance for your favorite company to create an advertisement for them. Create an image that will sell your product. It can be fashion, food or still life/products

*Be sure to include model releases for any models used in the photos.
*Be sure to copy your best images from each project. Edit tightly but please submit a minimum of four images into your selection folder for
grading.
