Medium Format Photography

Medium format

Applies to any film size in-between 35mm and large format (4″×5″ or more) and to the type of camera that uses the format. Due to the higher image resolution offered by the larger film size, the majority of medium-format users are professional photographers who often require fine image detail.

Color Temp & White Balance

Color Balance:

Here is a table of color temperature for some common light sources:

Color Temperature Light Source
1000-2000 K Candlelight
2500-3500 K Tungsten Bulb (household variety)
3000-4000 K Sunrise/Sunset (clear sky)
4000-5000 K Fluorescent Lamps
5000-5500 K Electronic Flash
5000-6500 K Daylight with Clear Sky (sun overhead)
6500-8000 K Moderately Overcast Sky
9000-10000 K Shade or Heavily Overcast Sky

As the color temperature rises, the color distribution becomes cooler.

Flash Take Home Quiz

Since you all don’t have a photo assignment next week and most of you have requested to learn how to use a flash, here is your assignment for next week. Complete this take home quiz and bring it to class on Monday, Feb. 4.

Once you have your flash, the question is how to better use it.

Briefly, your decisions are:

• Where am I going to put the light - and why?
• How am I going to get it to stay there?
• How am I going to trigger it?
• What will the quality of the light be: Hard or soft?
• What will the beam spread of the light be - wide, narrow?
• How will I balance the strobe’s intensity with the ambient light?
• How will I balance the strobe’s color with the ambient light?
